Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonic Acid is an anionic surfactant with molecules characterized by a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic group. Length of alkyl chain is usually C10 to C14. It is one of the most-used synthetic surfactant because of its relatively low cost, good performance and the fact that it can be dried to a stable powder. As LABSA has straight chain, it is biodegradable and environmentally friendly. It is mainly used to produce household detergents including laundry powders, laundry liquids, dishwashing liquids and other household cleaners. It is also used as an emulsifier for agricultural herbicides and in emulsion polymerization. LABSA is usually produced by the sulphonation reaction of Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) with sulphur trioxide.
